Back Cover

Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty's anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.

Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen's Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.

In her exquisitely written fantasy debut, Rachel Hartman creates a rich, complex, and utterly original world. Seraphina's tortuous journey to self-acceptance is one readers will remember long after they've turned the final page

In a Sentence

Seraphina is a must-read for any fantasy lover.

My Thoughts

Seraphina is one of those books that has been getting a TON of positive buzz over the last few weeks. And guys, if you're looking to see something different, I'm afraid you're not going to see it here today, because I really enjoyed Seraphina. In my opinion, this book was a fun-filled fantasy adventure with surprising depth and a wonderfully creative mythology. As I said in my "In a Sentence" section above, if you're into fantasy (or dragons), then Seraphina is a book you can't pass up!

Within the first few pages of the book, I had already fallen in love with the writing style. Hartman's descriptions of Seraphina's world felt simultaneously quaint and exotic. And who can review this book without commenting on Hartman's use of dragons? Well...in a word, it was creative. I mean, it's no secret that I read a fair amount of fantasy, and I've seen similar dragon mythologies attempted before, but none of those were done quite as well as the mythology in Seraphina

Speaking of the title character, Seraphina was definitely a person that I enjoyed reading about. As one of the few half dragons in existence, she's in quite the predicament. Because of her lineage, Seraphina straddles two worlds, but finds that she doesn't completely belong in either of them. As such, her story becomes not just an enjoyable fantasy tale, but also a story of struggle: of finding a place to belong and determining her own identity. Furthermore, the division between the humans and dragons in Seraphina echoes the problems of racism and ignorance that our society still deals with today.

I also found the minor characters in Seraphina to be almost as charming and interesting as the protagonist. The young princess Glisselda was a particular favorite of mine. She's somewhat spoiled and ignorant at times, but as the story progresses, it becomes more and more clear that Glisselda is a strong, caring, and capable young woman who is much more than she appears to be at first. Plus with her bubbly attitude and enthusiasm, I found it hard not to like her. The other secondary characters, such as (yes, there's a love interest) Kiggs, Orma, and Lars also quickly found their way into my heart.

The only downside I can see to Seraphina is one that didn't actually affect me, but it's something I can see affecting other readers, especially those who are unaccustomed to the high fantasy genre. What I mean by this is that Seraphina is a decent-sized book, and there's not always a nail-biting action scene to drive it along. There's quite a bit of focus on character development and world-building, which was a GOOD thing in my opinion, (and very characteristic of the genre) but those readers who aren't used to it may find Seraphina to be a bit convoluted and slow. If you wanted some advice, I'd say that for fantasy lovers (especially those with a fondness for high fantasy), Seraphina is a book that you're going to want to have on your shelf. If you're not so into that scene, you might want to check it out at the library first and see how it goes. Regardless, I think that Seraphina has a lot to offer, both as a fantasy novel and as a story of a young girl trying to find her place in the world.

But you make it sound so appealing with these wonderful secondary characters and world building, so I MUST read it ASAP! Besides, I'm a lover of everything and anything fantasy, so this seems like a score! :)

Excellent, very thorough and deatiled review, Natalie. :) Seraphina has been sitting on my shelf for some time now, waiting to be picked up. :( I'm a huge fan of high fantasy so I better get to it! The only aspect I'm worried about is the slow pace.. *sigh*

  10. Ohmygosh, I want to read this book SO bad! It's been WAY too long since I've read a dragon book and I do love them so. And this sounds like a very unique take on it. :)

  12. High fantasy, hooray! *clinks glass* I've been getting caught up in the Seraphina buzz too and I thought I wanted to read this before -- because fantasy! Dragons! Amazing world-building and characterization! -- but I'm even more pumped up now! Usually I'm not a slow book person, but I find that I appreciate it so much more in fantasy because it's required to make the cool worlds more enjoyable! So what does that say for me? This book will probably be FLAWLESS! x)

Beautiful helpful review, Natalie! :) <3

  16. I have been desperately trying to get to this one. I am so glad that it received high praise from you, Natalie! Yes, I have read the reviews stating the world building slows the pace down, but I am a huge stickler for world builder so I know I will agree with you on this aspect. Hoping to read it very soon! Have a great weekend, Natalie!

  19. Hmm, I'm not TOO used to fantasy, although I have enjoyed the ones I've read. I think I'm going to read Seraphenia as soon as I finish my current read. I'm hoping it lives up to the hype!

  21. Hmmmm. I wonder if I would like this. It sounds really good and has been getting great reviews but the fantasy genre is hit or miss for me.

  22. Hm.... I have to REALLY be in the mood for something like this, but I usually enjoy it a lot when I am. I should add this one for when I want a read like this. I don't know why, but dragons and mermaid put me off 90% of the time. lol

  23. AMAZING review, Natalie! Honestly, do negative reviews for this book even exist? (okay, probably 1 for every 75, but I've been paying those no mind :P) Again and again, I see gushing amounts of praise for this and... DRAGONS!!! DRAGONS. I'm ashamed that I've only really read one book where dragons play a prominent role, but that one book sparked my interest in finding more. So I'm really excited to see what Hartman has done with the mythology here.

The characters sound fantastic and I'm not sure the slower pace would worry me too much, if there is obvious character exploration and depth in place of intense action scenes. Cannot WAIT to read this!

  24. Such a great review, Natalie! I'm . . . slowly reading this one, and am thinking I won't enjoy it as much as everybody else. I like faster paced books, although not always the breaking-neck-fast-paced books. sadly, this one is just too slow for me. I'm still going to continue reading it, because there have been a TON of positive reviews for it! I don't want to be like the only one who didn't like it ha ha.

  25. Dragons! The slower pacing due to the high fantasy worries me slightly, but knowing what to expect going in is super helpful! Great review Natalie - and good luck with the big move!

  26. You're right Natalie, there is quite a lot of detail in the writing so it can come across as slow at times. I thought so especially at the beginning. But then detailed characters and great world-building is always a plus in the end! I haven't actually finished this book yet...it's requiring a lot of concentration on my part! I hope I end up loving it as much as you. :) fantastic review!

  30. EXACTLY! If you're not into slow-burners as far as plot, then you can't handle this one. I'm such a character girl that I could deal with that. SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU LIKED IT SO MUCH. It's really such a beautiful book, inside and out. And gosh, I loved Seraphina, AND KIGGS.

  31. Oh, Natalie, this is JUST what I've been waiting to hear. I mean, I'm a fantasy fan--PROPER fantasy, and I know you are, too. I just read Throne of Glass and just wanted... more. This sounds like EXACTLY what I've been waiting for, and seriously... I MUST get my hands on this one. SO excited! ♥
