Tune-in Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Ginger from GReads. The theme for the month of March is Book Playlists! It does not have to be an official one from an author (though it can be). If you've ever read something in a book and a certain song came to mind, we want to know about it! Or vice versa, if you've heard a song & immediately it brought you back to a certain scene in a book - share it with us!
Here's my pick for this week:
Synopsis
Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?
Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.
Ismae's most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?
I'm less than fifty pages into this book, but I heard this song playing on my radio today and immediately thought of Grave Mercy. In the beginning of the book, Ismae barely escapes from the brutal marriage her abusive father has forced her into. When she learns that she has a chance to train as a servant of Death and that she will learn to master an arsenal of deadly skills, she's just about overjoyed with the idea (which is definitely understandable, given her previous circumstances). Anyways, I thought that this song really embodied the bitter hatred that both Ismae and her fellow initiate Sybella harbor towards the men who used to be in their lives. To get an idea of how Ismae's life was prior to coming to the convent of St. Mortain, take a look at this quote:
"I think of my father and of Guillo. I think of all those in the village who worked so hard to make my life a misery. The young boys who threw stones at me, the old men who spat and stared at me with terror in their eyes, as if they expected me to snatch the souls from their old, wrinkled bodies. The younger men who fumbled clumsily at my skirts in dark corners, guessing correctly that my father cared not for my safety or reputation. It would be no hardship at all to kill the likes of them" (19-20, ARC). |
And in case you haven't heard this song before, the lyrics are below.
"Dirt Room" by Blue October
I'm like a ghost
I'll be living in a dirt room
Waiting for the day to be closer
To the window when you're home
I'll be standing by your back door
Reaching for the knife in my coat
I'm going to put it to your throat
Sweaty piggy, you're a bad man
What a f***ing sad way to go
Your mother raised you as a joke
I should have wiped away a burden
Use the curtain in the kitchen to choke
You
You think you own me
You should have known me
You took the future and the food off my family's plate
You think you'll use me
I'm stronger than you
You take my money, but it's useless
When see what I do to you
Look what I do to you
Oh god then you awoke
You started screaming through the duct tape
Don't ever think I'm letting you go
I'm busy digging you a hole
Now you'll be living in a dirt room
Breathing through the straw of your own
Come on
I really think that this is fun for the money
I'll make it comfy for the time wasted making you rich
I want to cover you in ants, bees and honey
Then take a picture for the cover of our album!
You think you own me
You should have known me
You took the future and the food off my family's plate
You think you'll use me
I'm stronger than you
You take my money, but it's useless
When see what I do to you
You think you own me
You should have known me
You took the future and the food off my family's plate
You think you'll use me
But I'm stronger than you
You take my money, but it's useless
When see what I do to you
And now I see you, oh
'Cause your back's against the wall
And finally you're mine
You're mine
You think you own me
You should have known me
You took the future and the food off my family's plate
You think you'll use me
I'm stronger than you
You take my money, but it's useless
When see what I do to you
I really think that this is fun for the money
We'll make you comfy for the time wasted making you rich
I want to cover you in ants, bees and honey

Ooh, I think Grave Mercy sounds SO amazing. I'm really, really jealous! The song you picked does seem like it goes perfectly with Ismae's mindset. I mean, the song is making a very compelling statement, and the imagery is forceful and a little scary. It kind of gives me chills. Sounds just like an assassin with a vendetta! I can't wait to see what you think about the book. I am crossing my fingers that its as awesome as it looks :)
