Hey guys! This week, I'm happy to have Melanie from Melanie's Musings here to do a guest review of the movie, The Vow. So without further ado, here's Melanie!

What is it like to lose your love story?

Paige can't remember her husband. At all.

The Vow is an odd mix of romantic comedy and serious drama. Watching it went like this:

Haha, this is so funny!

Then three minutes later:

Oh wait, this is serious.

Starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, The Vow is, overall, a cute movie. It has major swings into angst and seriousness but both the beginning and end are high, lighthearted notes.

McAdams and Tatum certainly make a cute couple. Tatum's character, Leo,  isn't too far from his role in Dear John. Once again, he plays  a devoted man, willing to do whatever is best for his lover. McAdam's  Paige is confused and uncertain which sometimes causes her to act like a  bitch but remains a sympathetic character due to her bizarre condition. She also goes through three hairstyles:

The Vow has a lot of  secondary characters that don't get much screen time. By the time the movie ended, I didn't know what half the characters' names were. They were absolutely important to the movie, yet their limited appearances left many feeling flat and static.

What left me feeling the most unsatisfied was The Vow's ending. The movie is based on a true story (a book by the same name is available), so rather than being shown how the characters' story ended, the screen cut to a picture of the real life couple and their family. I  felt like the cardinal rule of storytelling was broken. I was being told, instead of shown.

Still, The Vow is a cute movie. My favorite scenes were those with random moments of bizarre humor. It's worth watching if you're looking for something to remind you of love's invincibility.

  1. I love both Rachel McAdams (she is SO pretty) and Channing Tatum. I haven't heard of this one before (I keep up with new books, but not movies) and I would normally be very excited about it, but Melanie's opinion made me rethink that.
I think I'll see it eventually, but I certainly won't be in a hurry. Great post!

  2. I didn't mind this movie - The Vow. It was quite sad at times.

  3. Ahhhh! I've been dying to see The Vow!!!!! Alas, our little babe makes going to the movies rather impossible, so I am anxiously awaiting the Redbox version :) LOVE Rachel McAdams. And Channing Tatum sure isn't ugly. The "She also goes through three hairstyles" line cracked me up for some reason :) I think the short hair is my fav. I'm curious to see how I'll feel about the end. I actually think that seeing the real life couple sounds pretty great! Thanks for a lovely movie trailer to wake up to :)

    1. Haha, glad to make you laugh, Katie. My favorite is the third style. It's more preppy than the other two, but it looks more put together.

  4. I haven't seen this or heard much about it. I might check it out when it comes out on DVD. Thanks for the review.

  5. Pff, I didn't know it was out already. I can't wait to watch it too (love the actors and the love story sounds so sad, but great) :D

    Happy midnight reading!

  6. I agree about the ending. I was expecting something a bit different so I was kind of disappointed, but yeah, it was cute. My favorite scene was of Channing's butt. LOL

    1. LOL, I knew somebody was going to bring that up. The funniest line in the movie was when he said, "It's not like you haven't seen it before." The entire audience burst out laughing.

  7. I just want to say that if I woke up and Channing Tatum was beside my bed telling me we were married, confusion would not be the first thing I would feel. I would most likely do a happy dance despite my injuries:)

I'm really excited to see this movie, I'm glad that you enjoyed it aside from the ending:)

  8. Aww. Sounds like the kind of thing I would like. Thanks for mentioning the downsides, like the vague side characters. I usually like a good romantic drama so long as I know what the potential shortcomings might be.

    Thanks Melanie and Natalie!

  9. I'm with Jenny--Channing Tatum said he was my hubby, I don't think I'd question it too hard.

Not sure about that ending. While I do kind of like to know about the people the story was based on, I need a "real" ending to my "fake" story.

  10. Sounds like a good movie, but I'm waiting until it comes out on DVD. I'm trying to save my money for The Hunger Games movie ;)

  11. Hmm thanks for the honest review, sounds like a good DVD rental. I wish the ending was more satisfactory. This will be perfect when you just need a light pick me up!

  12. Not gonna lie, I'd watch this just to see some naked Channing butt! Mhmm.

    Tag, you're it!
Check it out if you get the chance, if you decide to answer let me know :)

  13. I loved the ending. I love when I'm allowed to fill in the blanks.

    Great honest review :)

  14. It switches to the real life couple at the end? Something like I'm okay with if they show pictures/footage while the credits roll or something, but to skip giving the characters a well executed ending in favour of a real life glimpse is a bit disappointing. I get it's based on the real couples story, but still, you grow invested in the actors playing the roles, so you want to see them in the roles at the end. But anyway!

It still sounds like an enjoyable, heartwarming movie and I eat those up :D The trailer definitely hooked me in and... Rachel McAdams!

I think I was supposed to say Channing Tatum haha. But I like Rachel :)

  15. I'm pretty sure I've watched almost every single Nicholas Sparks movie (and cried through all the ones I have!), but I still haven't watched this one yet! x) I love the idea of Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams together too -- and I find it so funny how they've all been the stars of NS movies before (Dear John and The Notebook)! Still, I'm really excited to watch this one for it's random moments of humor and sweetness! ;)

Awesome honest movie review, Melanie! Welcome to Natalie's blog, by the way! :) Don't you just love this meme? YAY for movie-lovers! <3

  16. Oooh, this sounds like a wait-for-DVD one, then? Sorry the ending was a bit of a fizzer. I don't mind seeing a 'what happened after' over the the end credits, but I want a satisfying, finished, fully resolved story with beginning-middle-end before I see that. It SHOULD just be sprinkles on top. Uneccessary, doesn't add much, but nice. Hmmmm... Can I just say I love your movie reviews? 'Cos, ah, I love your movie reviews ;D
