Review of Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

Unearthly (Unearthly, #1)

Title: Unearthly
Author: Cynthia Hand
Pages: 435
Publication Date: Jan. 2011
Source: Review copy, unsolicited

Back Cover

Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.

Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.

As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?

Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

First Lines

"In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees."

In a Sentence

While Unearthly was a decently enjoyable read, I felt that there wasn't much to mark it as different from other books in the genre.

My Thoughts

Alright guys, I'm going to start off by sa
ying that I'm in the minority when it comes to Unearthly, because, unlike most book bloggers, I did not fall head over heels in love with it. BUT...before I upset any of you, know this: it's not like I hated Unearthly either. In fact, my feelings towards this book probably lie on the positive side of mediocre, in that I liked more aspects of Unearthly than I disliked. However, there were still a few issues that I had with it that negatively affected my overall opinion of the book.

First of all, it took me quite awhile to actually get into the book. I found the beginning of Unearthly to be incredibly slow. While I wouldn't exactly call it painfully tedious, I definitely had no problems with putting down Unearthly during the first 200 or so pages. During the first half of the book, I only read two or three chapters a sitting because I had trouble with staying interested in the story. Though I had been warned by some of my friends that the book had a slow start, I didn't expect the slow pace to drag on for nearly as long as it did. My interest in Unearthly didn't pick up until around page 243 (for those of you who've read the book, this is about halfway through Clara's prom).

Clara herself annoyed me at times. Her obsession with Christian nearly drove me crazy. I understand that, as an angel-blood, anxiety over receiving her Purpose is natural, but personally, I felt she (and her mother) went a bit overboard with the whole Christian thing. I can see why keeping an eye on him would be important, but was it really necessary for Clara to spend all of her waking time pseudo-stalking him and mourning over the fact that he was already taken? When it came to this part of the plot line, I have to say I agreed with Clara's friend, Wendy:

"Christian has a girlfriend, as you might have noticed...I suggest you get over it" (188, ARC).

Clara's obsession with Christian bothered me even more because I found Christian to be a wholly bland and uninteresting character. There was nothing about him that suggested he was any different than your run-of-the-mill paranormal romance love interest. Not to mention Christian made up one branch of yet another love triangle. Don't get me started. If you guys don't already know how I feel about most love triangles...well...you can probably make a pretty good guess from my tone.

However, despite my problems with Christian, I liked quite a few of the other characters in Unearthly. First of all, I loved that both Clara's mom and brother had active roles in her life and the plot. While there could have been a little more development concerning their characters, I suspect that this will happen later in the series. I also liked the character of Tucker. His country-boy charm and sense of humor was one of the reasons why I enjoyed the second half of the book much more than the first half.

I also felt that the last couple pages of Unearthly were well-written. The quote below is probably my favorite from the book:

"We didn't ask for any of this; we were born into it. And yet we're supposed to serve blindly, to follow rules we don't understand, to let some larger force map out our lives and tell us who we should love and what, if anything, we should dare to dream" (435, ARC).

I think this brief passage pretty much sums up the underlying theme that Cynthia Hand was trying to get across with this book. I've personally experienced how difficult it can be to question or break away from a way of thinking that you were born and raised in, and I appreciated the fact that Clara had started to realize the importance of making your own decisions and thinking about things instead of letting someone else make all of your decisions. Even if she only went against the system because of her own feelings, that still takes guts, and her doing so made me respect her more as a character by the end of the book.

Overall, Unearthly was a decent read, but it didn't blow me out of the water. However, I am interested enough in the story to continue the series with book number two, Hallowed

  1. Glad to hear you still enjoyed it. I loved this book and Tucker of course! Anyway great review!

  2. I've seen a lot of hype surrounding this book. It's always a little disappointing when a book so many love seems to fall a little flat for you. It takes a lot to stand apart in the YA paranormal romance genre these days.

    1. SO true. It's getting to the point where I feel like everything's been done already!

  3. Great review - thoughtful and honest. Thank you! I feel like I'm one of the few bloggers left who still hasn't read Unearthly... still not in any hurry :)

  4. Definitely a slow start on this one. My favorite part of Unearthly had to be Tucker. So charming!

  5. "positive side of mediocre"

LOL! Oh, Natalie. I love your reviews because they are so honest. I haven't read Unearthly yet, but I'm planning to someday. The hype kind of turned me off, plus, I'm not much into Angels, but for your take. It made my expectations level out.

    1. Lol! I'm glad you enjoy my honesty. Like I said in the review...it was worth the time I spent reading it, but it didn't exactly knock my socks off. Maybe you'll enjoy it more if you go in with lower expectations than I did! I'll be starting Hallowed soon, so I'm interested to see what I'll think of it...

  6. I agree with you Natalie I noted in my review the slow pace of the story and it does get repetitve witht the repeated passages on the visions. It doesn't pick up until the big climax and the end makes the book worth it. What won me over was the scenery and Tucker. I agree too about Christian. I struggled with him in book one but you get to know him better in Hallowed! What did you think of the scenery having been to Jackson yourself?

    1. The scenery is one thing that I forgot to mention in my review. I really liked it! The part at the beginning where Clara and her mother and brother take a picture under the arch made of elk antlers...I totally remember that spot!

  7. CLARA'S OBSESSION WITH CHRISTIAN BOTHERED ME TOO!
And all this time, I thought I'd been wearing crazy-reading-glasses, because nobody else has noticed it, either! But she pines after this guy who isn't mean or anything, but is completely bland and indifferent. And all the while, there's this other guy that she's treating so shabbily. Uggh!
    Good call, girl.

  8. I liked this one as well. I also need to read the next book! I think I warmed to this one because there was character growth, but now that you reminded me of it... I wanted more. I think this is a great honest review. Love it!

  9. hMM.. Good points. Haven't read this yet but everyone keeps saying how amazing it is. I should just try it out just to see what I think of it too. Great review!

  10. She was a little over-obsessed with Christian and kind of had blinders on to the rest of the world. Still, despite the slow start, I really enjoyed it. Sorry it wasn't a stand-out for you--maybe next time! :)

  11. Aw, I really enjoyed this book but I loved reading why you didn't! I agree about Clara be a little bit TOO obsessed with Christian but luckily, she grew out of it before I wanted to outright throttle her. Baby steps! I actually thought Cynthia Hand did the love triangle pretty well because I was not expecting Tucker at all. She does flesh out Christian more in the second book though, which I appreciate so he's not exactly the blob of a character in this book. This was a very well-written and honest review, thank you! :)

    1. For a debut novel, I thought it was pretty decent. I definitely think Cynthia Hand has potential, and I wouldn't mind reading more books by her in the future.

Glad to hear that Christian's character gets a little more development in book two. I'll be starting it soon, so I'm curious to see what I'll think of it!

  12. That's valid. I LOVED Unearthly, but totally get your POV. Also, word, I think Christian is bland too, TUCKER ALL THE WAY, yo.

  13. I haven't read the book, yet, but your review really surprised me. I hadn't run across a negative one, yet. I'm looking forward to seeing what I think about it, but I won't expect too much going into it. Thanks for your honest and through thoughts!

  14. Hah, if you choose to read the sequel, Hallowed, you'll find even slower plot and even more boy-obsessing. Those two things you pointed out didn't bother me so much in Unearthly, but man, they really dragged down Hallowed for me.

  15. Same views here, though my memory's cloudy from reading the book over a year ago. An okay book, but kind of faux-love-triangley, and not such a stand-out angel book as I was led to believe.

  16. Sorry to hear this didn't wow you in the way you were expecting! Especially given how much hype it receives. I really enjoyed it, but I can absolutely see where you're coming from. I am happy you liked Tucker though hehe. I'm very interested to see what you think of Hallowed when you read it. I need to get my hands on a copy soon, but so far I've read all gushing reviews for it.

    Excellent review, Natalie!

  17. Haven't read this one yet though it's in my TBR pile. Looks like I'm going to be annoyed quite a bit, love triangles bother me too.

  18. People keep recommending this one to me but I just get the feeling it won't be for me. (love triangle - big thumbs down) Since I usually agree with you on these types of books & with Tiger, I'm going to give this a pass or maybe wait until the series is over to read it all at once.

  19. I really didn't love UNEARTHLY, but I thought HALLOWED was a pretty decent follow-up :) I think you'll like it! Great review!

  20. I felt pretty much the same way about Unearthly. I love how your review says everything I thought at the time. It really didn't even make me want to read Hallowed, I'm afraid, especially since I'd found out that she takes the love triangle even further.
    Amazing review, Natalie. :)

  22. Sometimes I think you have a superpower for writing reviews, Nat -- I could connect with everything you said!! When I first started this book, it was a solid 3 star book for me too, but the second half (with Tucker! <3) raised it to a 4 LOL. But the second time I read it, I loved it so much more and that's the reason it currently sits as a 5 on my shelf! x)

This was such an AMAZING and honest review, Natalie! <3 I had the exact same problems as you at first. But I promise that Hallowed gets so much better (and more intense!) so I'm really glad you're giving it another shot! :)

    1. Superpower for writing reviews? I could live with that...LOL! And Tucker was definitely a plus side of this book for me. :)

  23. Oh goodness, I'm so with you on the love triangle thing. SO NOT A FAN... I guess it seems like it's a mandatory plot device for so many books... but that doesn't mean it can't be done well... I apreciate it when it's good, but yeah...

    oooh, but I LOVE this!:
"We didn't ask for any of this; we were born into it. And yet we're supposed to serve blindly, to follow rules we don't understand, to let some larger force map out our lives and tell us who we should love and what, if anything, we should dare to dream."

I'm sorry you didn't LOVE it, but it sounds OK, either way? I've just ordered a copy, so it'll be interesting to read after this. I REALLY enjoy seeing different opinions on books! :D

  24. I may be more interested in this after your review. I keep assuming angel books will all be like Fallen or Halo. So I may pick this one up...maybe after the whole series is written. Great review.

    1. Haven't read Fallen, but I was DEFINITELY not a fan of Halo, and Unearthly is completely different. It didn't strike me as jaw-dropping amazing, but it was worth reading and, in my opinion, much better than a lot of angel books I've read.

  25. Hi Natalie - I was actually bouncing around for the blogger love-a-thon and landed here and thought - hey, familiar!

After Cait wrote up her review of Hallowed, I thought I had to immediately buy it because I read Unearthly and I couldn't wait for the sequel, right? But then I looked up my review and found that I gave it a B and thought the same things you did.

Cait spoiled Hallowed for me so I don't need to pick it up if I don't want to. I don't like these drawn out love triangles. :(

  26. Hi, Natalie! I really love your reviews, did you know? They're very well thought out in a way that I don't really see around much on the blogosphere. It's obvious you put a lot of time and love into them. It makes me happy, haha :)
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the book as much as I did (although it's been a while since I read it, and I can't really remember much if I'm being honest). I do agree that it doesn't stand out of the crowded book shelves in the YA genre. It just doesn't have that spark that really sets it apart. I still am looking forward to Hallowed, though!

    See you around :)

    1. Hey Lilly!

Aww...thanks so much for the compliment! :) I'm totally flattered! Like I said, Unearthly didn't quite have that spark that you mentioned, but I'm still planning on reading Hallowed. I think it's getting harder and harder for YA books to stand out from the others because there are just SO many of them these days! Not that I'm complaining, because I love YA lit!

  27. That's okay! If we all liked the same books, I think we'd be pretty bland as book bloggers. It's like I didn't care for the Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and so many bloggers raved for days on that one. I agree with your comment above. It is getting hard for YA books to stand out. I think I liked this one because it's the second YA angel book I read. At the time, it was different, but now it seems like the YA market is becoming saturated with angels and dystopians. I think vampires need to make a comeback!

    1. The market definitely goes through it's trends like there's no tomorrow, that's for sure! If one book hits it off...BAM! lol.

  28. "Her obsession with Christian nearly drove me crazy."

I know, right?? I was so relieved once he went out of town and Clara finally stopped being all weird about him. And Tucker was definitely a great character :)

    Great review!
