An Epic of Awesome Power

Kahlan has at last gained the one goal she had always thought was beyond her grasp ... love. Against all odds, the ancient bonds of secret oaths, and the dark talents of men long dead, Richard has won her heart.

Amid sudden and disastrous events, Richard's life is called due to satisfy those treacherous oaths. To save his life, Kahlan must forsake Richard's love and cast him into the chains of slavery, knowing there could be no sin worse than such a betrayal.

Richard is determined to unlock the secrets bound in the magic of ancient oaths and to again be free. Kahlan, alone with the terrible truth of what she has done, must set about altering the course of a world thrown into war. But even that may be easier than ever winning back the heart of the only man she will ever love.

First Lines

"Rachel clutched her doll tighter to her chest and stared at the dark thing watching her from the bushes."

In a Sentence

In spite of a few minor flaws, Stone of Tears was a solid follow-up to Wizard's First Rule.

My Thoughts

When I first sat down to review Stone of Tears, I had a similar problem that I did when I reviewed Inheritance by Christopher Paolini: I had quite a bit of trouble collecting and organizing all of my thoughts on such a LONG book! I let my ideas bounce around inside my head for a few days, jotting notes down whenever I came across something important, and finally, almost a week later, I was able to start writing my review of Stone of Tears

Stone of Tears is the second book in Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series, a series which I originally picked up because I fell in love with the television series Legend of the Seeker, which is based on the books. Though I promise my review is going to center on the book and not the TV series, I can't help but tell you all that the first season of Legend of the Seeker is available for free on Hulu (it's also on Netflix, if you have that). You should give it a shot. Seriously. It's a little corny but I love it!

Okay, now that my shameless TV show plugging is over (for now), I'll get on with my thoughts about Stone of Tears. First of all, I have to say my favorite thing about this book was the character development of Kahlan Amnell. It was awesome. I can't exactly tell you the specifics of why it was so awesome without giving away too many spoilers, but I can say this: Goodkind did a brilliant job of exploring the developing dichotomy between Kahlan and her magical role as the Mother Confessor. Throughout the book, Kahlan had to make several incredibly difficult decisions that would drive just about anyone else insane. Yet she managed to retain her determination and perseverance and never stopped fighting, despite all of the challenges she faced. Kahlan is probably one of the strongest female characters I've ever encountered in the genre of high fantasy, and I love that she plays such a big part in this series!

On the other side of things, I wasn't quite satisfied with the characterization of Richard Cypher, the other main protagonist in the book. Richard's story in Stone of Tears mainly revolved around learning about his newfound abilities, and I felt that he didn't do a lot of growing in the book. Since this is only the second book in the series, I expect that this issue will be resolved in future installments, but I would have liked to see a little bit more in this department. While I didn't mind reading the parts of the book from Richard's point of view, I definitely looked forward to the viewpoint switch to Kahlan, who, as I mentioned above, was fantastic.

There were a few times in Stone of Tears when things seemed to get a little long-winded, but that often seems to be a characteristic of the high fantasy genre, and not just something that's unique to this series. Unfortunately, it's also one of the things about high fantasy that often discourages new readers. Still, at heart, the story was good in Stone of Tears, and I didn't feel like the book overly dragged on. For the large majority of the book, I had no problem at all flipping through pages and racing right through the book.

The ending of Stone of Tears felt to me like it was a little rushed and wrapped up just a little too neatly, but it wasn't enough of a serious annoyance to spend much time talking about it, especially since I'm sure the characters won't have all that much time to enjoy their brief respite from danger and despair before they're thrust into another adventure in the next book, Blood of the Fold.

In spite of the couple of issues I mentioned in this review, I found Stone of Tears to be, for the most part, an extremely enjoyable book. I stayed up later than I should have two or three nights in a row just so I could find out what happened next. I will definitely be continuing this series, and I look forward to reading more of Goodkind's work!

  1. You're so right, Nat -- fantasy novels DO tend to get a little long-winded! Haha but I guess that's a part of their charm, although it's that very reason that I try not to recommend high fantasy to new readers, too. x) Still, I just ADORE anything fantastical so this book definitely sounds right up my alley! :) And I had no clue that the Legend of the Seeker was based off of this series -- my uncle used to love that show!

Awesome honest review, Natalie! Even with those issues you mentioned, I'm really glad that you still enjoyed this book overall! :)

  2. I saw you read this book over at Goodreads and my jaw dropped at the number of pages. It's really hard for me to read over 400 pages of fantasy, that's how far I got in the first Game of Thrones books while everyone I know breezed through the series. I think the longest book I read was 800+ pages. Anyway! I didn't realise this was what Legend of the Seeker was based of. I've only watched one or two episodes of the show but I heard it was campy fun. I'm so glad to hear that Kahlan is such a great character, I love female characters like that. She's also so beautiful on the show, haha. I think long-winded is a problem with fantasy too, I actually don't think I've ever seen a short fantasy novel. I'm glad you overall enjoyed it though. :D

    1. I know what you mean! This book was DEFINITELY a chunkster. I guess I should be thankful that I'm a relatively quick reader!

I started Game of Thrones over the summer and was really enjoying it, but I had to put it down because things got crazy with work. I can't wait to pick it back up again, because I've heard so many great things!

  3. *eyes boggle at the page number* No wonder you took notes! That aside, I actually DO enjoy fantasy novels, I just don't seem to pick them up often enough and I honestly, I don't know why! Every time I do, I usually end up loving the book.

Despite some issues, I'm happy this was a good installment in the series. And since you do have awesome taste in books, I'll have to check them out when I have more time! Awesome review :)

  4. I loved the TV series and was so sorry to see it not renewed. Even my daughter who doesn't like fantasy liked it.

I read the first book in the series and liked it. I'd read this one but it's so long. And for my blog now I have so many books to read that I sadly read no adult fantasy because of the problem that they take too long to read. But I love Richard's and Kahlan's story and would love to read the whole series.

  5. I really liked the tv show and I thought the first book was good but there was a lot of things that I think could have been left out of it. I've been meaning to pick up Stone of Tears but it's just so long. It's encouraging to hear a good review of it since many of the reviews I have read were not very flattering.
    Great review!

  6. Great book but, sadly, probably the last great one in the series. Blood of the Fold was decent, but that's where Goodkind started to lose me. He did end strong with the last 2 books, but there was definitely a dry stretch there.

  7. Hmm...Where have I been? I've heard about the TV series, but have never watched it. I don't think I knew it was developed from a series. *be's full of fail*

It takes me a long time to get into fantasy, especially in long books. But thanks for the TV plug. I have netflix so I think I'll check it out. :)

    1. The show is definitely worth watching (in my opinion), even if you don't ever get around to reading the books.

  8. I think I told you this when you reviewed the first book, but I'm totally obsessed with Legend of the Seeker too! Such a great show:) Interesting that the ending would be rushed given how long the book is, but obviously you enjoyed the story overall. How many books are in this series? I don't even know:)

    1. I think (emphasis on think) that there are eleven novels and a novella in this series so far! Lol. It's going to take me awhile to catch up!

But YAY for Legend of the Seeker fans. I've always thought that show was underrated. :)

  9. We picked these up at a library sale because a friend told me they would good. But the length has given me pause - I've had the reason for not starting Game of Thrones. But glad to know if I get the courage to tackle the series, they're good.

I loved Legend of the Seeker, and never knew it was based on these books! Yes, cheesy and corny but so much fun! Thanks for the review and I'll head to Hulu for some Seeker fun!

  11. Thanks for the review. I grew up on high fantasy, so it's definitely my reading comfort zone! Once I finish the massively epic fantasy series I'm currently working on, I might have to check this one out!

BTW, my review of Thirst is up on my blog if you want to check it out!

  12. This review is PERFECT timing! Last night I watched Legend of the Seeker (an episode from season 2) and it reminded me how much I ADORE the show. I seriously need to sit down and watch it from beginning to end because I've only seen random episodes here and there (I know, they stopped the show). But it got me thinking that I really should try the books so I put the first boxed set on my wishlist.
I'm a little worried cause although I love high fantasy they do get long winded and this tends to make me put them off. If I wasn't in such a hurry all the time and could just relax then I could probably sit around reading fantasy all the time. So I'm thinking I'll definitely have to try this series but it may take a bit to push me to actually pick up the first one and start reading.
Thank you SO much for the review! It might push me to actually read them sooner.

    1. Words can't express how much I wish Legend of the Seeker hadn't been cancelled. I loved that show so much! I'm actually doing a rewatch of the series now, which is what prompted me to continue the book series.

Anyways, I'm SO incredibly glad that this review came along at the right time for you. I love it when that happens! :)

  13. Nicely reviewed, Natalie! I have trouble with a lot of high fantasy books, but I actually really enjoy the films--go figure! This one sounds intriguing, though.

  14. This sounds really good! Depsite the downsides, I love the sound of how strong Kahlan is and the insanely difficult decisions she has to make.
