My Thoughts

I decided to go see The Woman in Black last Tuesday for two reasons: 1) Daniel Radcliffe was in it and 2) I'm a sucker for a good scary movie. Lucky for me, one of my local movie theaters has half price Tuesdays, so for a mere $3.50, I got to see a movie I had long been waiting for.

Going into the film, I knew one thing....The Woman in Black would probably determine if I would ever be able to see Radcliffe as someone other than Harry Potter. Don't get me wrong, I love Harry Potter (both the books and the movies), but after seeing Radcliffe in so many movie installments as the same character for SO many years, I was afraid that he might be permanently typecast in my brain.

Fortunately, this was definitely not the case. For the first five minutes or so of The Woman in Black, I was definitely thinking about Harry Potter, but that was it. Radcliffe took next to no time to fully convince me that he was Arthur Kipps, a down-on-his-luck attorney mourning the loss of his beloved wife. For the remainder of the film, Harry Potter didn't even cross my mind. In my opinion, Radcliffe's performance in The Woman in Black was a compelling one, and it marked him as an actor with the capability to perform outside of a single role.

I was pleasantly surprised to find myself almost immediately drawn into the movie. The setting was gloomy and Gothic and decidedly creepy. As a horror movie fan, I'll be the first to admit that one of the flaws of the genre is its tendency to center on gore and shock value instead of actually developing characters or a story line. The awesome thing about The Woman in Black was that it managed to have all of the qualities of a good horror flick that leave your spine tingling and heart racing, but a lot of attention was paid to the story as well.

On a sidenote, Ciaran Hinds also deserves a mention for his role as the wealthy townsman, Sam Daily. In a town full of superstitious people, Daily is a nonbeliever and is one of the only characters who welcomes Arthur Kipps, even going so far as to provide him a room at his house when he is forced to leave the local inn. Hinds' role as Daily created a vivid (albeit secondary) character whose presence added significantly to my enjoyment of the film.

Overall, The Woman in Black had everything I could ever want in a good horror movie. It's definitely not for the faint of heart, but for those of you who are wondering, the gore is kept to a minimum, and it's more of a psychological thriller than anything else. Still, not a movie I would recommend watching before bed, but one that I would recommend to anyone who has any interest at all in the horror movie genre!

The Woman In Black

The film The Woman in Black is based on a novel by the same name, published by Susan Hill in 1983. I haven't read the book, but after seeing the movie, I've added it to my to-read list. For more information, click the image above to be taken to the book's Goodreads page!

  3. Glad there's not much gore. This is on my list to see but I'll probably have to wait for the DVD.

We're looking to redesign our blog and I can't find any headers and backgrounds I love. Can you e-mail me how you did yours? Thanks.

  4. Oooooh I've been intrigued by this mainly because of Daniel Radcliffe and like you, I was curious to see how he'd do outside of Harry Potter. Very glad to hear he still has a promising career ahead of him :) And I love me a super creepy psychological thriller! I don't often find movies that legitimately give me tingles up the spine, so I'm hoping The Woman in Black may just do the trick. Definitely will be checking this out on your recommendation!

  5. Oooooh I've been tempted to see this one, but my fiance has absolutely no desire to see it, whatsoever haha I love psych. thrillers though, and your review makes me want to see it even more. Maybe I'll be brave and go by myself ;)

  6. Yep I couldn't go see it because I am such a wuss! I figured that D.R. would do brilliantly in the role but the movie looked entirely to scary for me.

  7. The movie trailer makes it look super creepy! I must watch it but it has to be during the day. Completely scared!

  8. Ohh wow Natalie I have been very curious about that movie. It looks so spooky. I am glad you enjoyed it and recommend it. Perhaps I will read the book first. Either way I am looking forward to it.

    2. They made quite a few changes to the story for the film, but I think it all worked.

  10. I'm looking forward to seeing this sometime soon. I watched a made-for-TV movie of The Woman in Black when I was twelve, and it gave me nightmares for weeks afterwards! I'm looking forward to seeing how it transfers to the big screen!

    1. Lol. When I was just a little older than that, I watched The Exorcist with a bunch of friends from my volleyball team and I'm telling you...I had a hard time sleeping without the lights on for weeks! And the worst part was that I wasn't supposed to watch R rated movies, so I couldn't even tell my parents how terrified I was!

  11. I was happy that this movie was more thriller than gory, too. I can't stand gory movies. And like you, I thought Radcliffe did a remarkable job. The ending killed me!!!

  12. I can't watch horror AT ALL! I get freaked out by the slightest thing, but I can read the books if they aren't outright HORROR. I'm not for sure this would be my thing for either, but I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I think I'd have a hard time picturing Daniel as anyone other then Harry Potter and I haven't even watched the movies (just bits and pieces, though I'm reading the books so I'll watch the movies once I finish). I'm glad you were able to get past him as HP and he was able to become someone else.

  13. I have the book, but have yet to read it. Some of the newspaper reviews weren't that great and dampened my enthusiasm, but you've restored it! Yeah! I'll go check it out. Thanks, Natalie :-)

  14. Errr... sooo... I've never ever HEARD of this one... HOW? It sounds EFFING AMAZING!
I've been wondering about the Dnaiel Radcliffe issue for a while. He's a GOOD actor... but he's just so... Harry. I keep on thinking about comparisons between him and Frodo/Elijah Wood (they even look vaguely similar). I'm SOOO glad you could get past it!
I'm not great with gore, or kind of... I dont' know, demonic-posession-style horror, but psychological? HELL YES! Can't wait till this one comes out in Australia!

I don't think I knew you reviewed movies, but I LOVED this! FAB review Natalie! ♥♥♥

    1. Lol. Too bad you weren't around here when I reviewed the first four series of Doctor Who. I think you're one of the few people who could appreciate my crazy enthusiasm for them! Haha!

The movie was definitely creepy, but so good! And D.R. DOES kind of look like Elijah Wood. Harry Potter the hobbit. Who knew? Lol.

  15. This movie scared the bejeezus out of me!! Have you seen the 1989 version (I think you can YouTube it) -- also very well-done. I couldn't believe how intense this film was -- it constantly kept you wondering what would happen next. The set was gorgeous.

  16. OOOHHH!! SCARY MOVIE ALERT! I do love a good scary movie and this one earns bonuses because of Daniel himself. I've been impressed with his ability to chameleon like he does (I'm thinking his stint on stage) and look forward to watching this one!

  17. LOL Nat, I love Tuesday movie nights too! ;) <3 I probably shouldn't watch this movie because I'm probably the biggest scaredy cat in the history of scaredy cats LOL. But my friends are trying to drag me out to watch this one next Tuesday, so it's really good to know that it's more than just a gory movie! Although sometimes it's hard to tell which is scarier anyways -- thrillers or gory movies. x)

Loved this review, Natalie! Reviewing movies is such a great idea! :) Although I have to admit that the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the trailer was HARRY POTTER... even though I've never watched a Harry Potter movie in my life LOL! :P

  19. I think this is a FAB review of The Woman in Black. I really enjoyed the movie, and I think you captured it perfectly. Just like you, I quickly added the book to my tbr list. Radcliffe was phenomenal in this roll! :)

  20. I was so happy for Radcliffe to have a strong box office with this film although it really wasn't to my taste. I hated, hated, hated the ending but enjoyed his performance in the rest of the film.

  21. I've never watched/read Harry Potter, and I've yet to see a Daniel Radcliffe film. I haven't quite decided whether or not to see this one or not, since I'm easily terrified.

  22. Oh good! You said everything I wanted to hear about this movie. I have such high hopes for it. I LOVE the book and highly recommend it.

(P.S. $3.50 for a movie?! If we had any half price days here, our half price would be your full price! Lucky you!)
