I was going to put up a Movie Cast Monday post today, but due to all of the controversy surrounding Dr. Scroggins' article and readers' responses, I decided to get together a group of bloggers to do giveaways, reviews, and posts of the books that Scroggins' questioned. There's still time to join in, if you'd like. Just shoot me an e-mail at mindfulmusings(at)live(dot)com, and I'll send you the details!
Since I'm going to be busy working on our #SpeakLoudly project, I leave you this food for thought. For those of you who haven't seen it, it's a MUST WATCH. In this video, Laurie Halse Anderson composes (and reads) her poem "Listen," which was written based on the responses she got from readers of Speak.
Today, I challenge all of you to speak out about Speak, Twenty Boy Summer, Slaughterhouse Five, and our right to freedom from censorship. Don't just keep it in the blogosphere. Tell your friends, your family, and your community. Let your voice be heard, and don't forget to SPEAK LOUDLY!
For more information on how you can take action, see my reaction post HERE.

I have not read those books, only Wintergirls. But now I do want to read them. Especially Speak. The poem is beautiful, she can truly have a gift with words. Thank you for putting this clip on your blog!
ReplyDeletewell now, that was powerful. I've really got to read some more Laurie Halse Anderson.
ReplyDeleteI have Speak and Wintergirls on my shelf but I haven't read them. After watching the video I'm going to move them up on my list =)
ReplyDeleteI just read Twenty Boy Summer, and I'm so incredibly disappointed in Scroggins' narrow-minded, fundamental Christian views on the story. It's a well-known fact that teens are going to have sex...would he rather teens read about having unprotected sex, or would he simply not want them to read anything at all? Books like these that are relevant and meaningful make teens want to read...isn't that a good thing? Ugh.
ReplyDeleteYay for taking action!
ReplyDeleteWonderful poem. It says so much about the necessity of these issues being brought into the light of day. Pretending they don't happen or not wanting to talk about them does no one any good.
