Bloggers Speak Out is a movement sparked by the recent article, "Filthy Books Demeaning to Republic Education" by Dr. Wesley Scroggins that was published in the Springfield, MO News-Leader on September 18th. In this article, Scroggins vehemently advocates the censorship of books in schools, and specifically requests that the following books be removed from the Republic school system: Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler, and Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. To show our support of these authors and to fight against book banning and censorship, we have decided to take action and speak out.

Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI hate when some over educated pinhead wants to decide what my kids can read. I have a twelve year old son that is an avid reader because I give him freedome to read what he likes, to an extent. He is a mature child and is able to handle subject matter above his age. But I feel it is up to the parent to decide, not the government. Only we know what our children can handle. If I only let him read books that are labled for his age, he would be bored and would not have read even half of what he has. Now believe me, he is not reading anything harmful. I do set limits. BUT the limits are mint to set.
great giveaway! thanks :D

We don't have enough people who think for themselves. Books open worlds to those who can't get there. Thanks for giving people who are concerned about these things a forum.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the give away...
ReplyDeleteit's a good idea!
I didn't even hear about this ban until I came across your blog.
I don't understand what this guy finds wrong about these stories...
Some stories that seem a little much usually have a good meaning to them.
I'm currently reading Twenty Boy Summer and it's a perfectly fine (and extremely interesting) book.
Keep up the good workk(:
