My Thoughts

If you're a frequent reader of paranormal romance or urban fantasy, chances are, you've heard of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward. Personally, I'd heard about the series a few times here and there, but never really thought much about it. That is: until I was chatting with my friend Lisa from A Life Bound by Books. When she found out that I hadn't read the series yet, she just about had a heart attack on me. After our conversation, I decided to buy the e-book for Dark Lover with a gift card I'd won over at 25 Hour Books.

Dark Lover was pretty easy to get into. I immediately liked the characters that made up the Black Dagger Brotherhood. At first, I thought that having so many important characters would be overwhelming and perhaps even tedious at times, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that each of the brothers had a unique and intriguing personality. I'm excited to learn ore about each of their backgrounds!

Speaking of background...this was a part of the book that dragged a bit for me. While I understand that establishing a new world and the history behind the characters is essential for a series, it can also get a little dull at times. It wasn't hair-pulling, forehead-smacking-ly boring, but there were times when I didn't have any trouble putting off the book until later.

I also had a few issues with the part of the book that was written through the lesser's point of view. (A lesser is a supernatural, human-like creature that hunts vampires). While I thought the idea of the lessers was intriguing, I wasn't a big fan of reading through the chapters that focused on them. I found them to be boring, and sometimes, I ended up skimming these sections.

Overall, the first book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series was an enjoyable read. It didn't completely blow my mind, but it did a pretty good job of holding my attention. I'm planning on continuing with the series, especially since I've heard it gets better! I'm excited to learn more about the members of the Black Dagger Brotherhood!

P.S. Did anyone else LOVE Fritz? :)

  1. I agree about the distinct personalities. That's one item J.R. Ward is excellent at doing. Each one of her characters stand out. If I met them on the street, I'd never have to say, which one are you again?

  2. Great review! It makes me want to re-read the series. And Reena in the comment above hit the nail on the head. I'd know right away who each brother was if I met then on the street.

Glad your enjoying it and I'm looking forward to your reviews of the books in the series yet to come. :) I really can't wait to hear what you think of the 3rd book! I so <3 Z!! (and thanks for the shout out)

  3. Yet another review I agree completely with. I think I liked the second and third books more because we're done with the world building. Not that there isn't some background thrown in, she just doesn't take the time to retell you every detail (which I love!).

I hate reading the Lesser's POV. I think you're supposed to feel creeped out by it, but still I find myself skimming them every time.

Looking forward to seeing what you think of the next one. And thanks for the link love!

  4. So many people agree with your thoughts on the Lesser's POV. I don't mind them so much. For me it rounds out the book completely. Great review. Glad to see you are going to continue reading them.

  5. The books get better and better with each new addition! I've never liked reading the lesser's POV. However, some much sinister lessers enter the story later on and while they are sick bastards, they make the reading more interesting! CREEPY!

  6. I seem to be in the minority here since I am not familiar with this series, but I loved your review and think I need to give the book a try. Thanks

  7. You did a great review of this one. I just read this too. I gave it 5 stars, but I do agree that the chapters about the lessors were kind of boring. I just loved Wrath!

  8. I love Fritz too. The first book is not as good, the others are SO MUCH BETTER. So keep reading. I almost quit after Dark Lover, I thought it was almost meh. But the rest in the series are awesome!

So glad you're reading the BDB!

  9. I keep seeing books from this series around a lot! I'm thinking about finally reading them, but I'm not 100% sure if I should. I'll be looking forward to seeing what you think of the other books in the series.

  10. I love Fritz through the whole series. He is great :)

I will admit that most of the time I skip the Lesser part of the story when it is just them (I read the parts with the brothers). I just don't feel very connected to them!

  11. This is probably the least interesting one in the series. It does get better.I can;t even remember the last time I read the parts about the lesser's ...lol I skim right over them!

  12. I also didn't like the lessers' parts. I've read all the books in the series, and I've never warmed up to them. Not because they're the villains, but because well, they take me away from the parts that I want to read! Plus, they take away the space that should have been given to the main characters! :)

Dark Lover for me is forgettable. It's just like any other PNR book out there with vamps the good guys. The number of brothers was confusing for me when I first read this book (like who was who), but I got a good grasp in Book 2, Lover Eternal, because I think it's here that the distinct characteristics of the brothers came out.

Overall, I love the series, though of course, I love some individual books more, especially #3. I love that there's a novella of him and his family in Ward's Insider Guide, which I'm reading right now.
